Records about horse breeding can be found in several federal, cantonal or private institutions. In federal institutions, archives are well conserved and easily accessible thanks to outstanding facilities for research, both on the internet and in well catalogued literature. Cantonal institutions have also made an effort to classify their archives and to make them accessible to the public. However some places (such as the Breeding federations or the National Studfarm) have their archives in a precarious state. Access to these records as well as their conservation are uncertain.
During the last few years, these institutions have been weakened by modifications in the structure of horse breeding - Government privatisation of the stud-book, creation of individual breed societies, and widespread personnel changes. In view of this situation, there is a huge risk that important documents might be lost altogether during the next years.

Les sources relatives à l'élevage du cheval sont dispersées dans plusieurs institutions, fédérales, cantonales et privées. Dans les institutions fédérales, les documents sont conservés dans de très bonnes conditions et sont facilement accessibles grâce à des outils de recherche performants, sur Internet ou dans des inventaires détaillés. De même, les institutions cantonales ont fait un effort certain pour classer les documents et les rendre accessibles au public. Toutefois, certains services (fédérations d'élevage, haras national) détiennent leurs documents dans un état précaire. L'accès à ces sources et leur conservation ne sont donc pas assurés.
Les changements dans les structures de l'élevage chevalin - privatisation par la Confédération de la gestion du stud-book, création de nouvelles organisations responsables pour chaque race - apparus ces dernières années, de même que les changements de personnel, fragilisent encore plus ces services. Aussi le risque est-il grand de voir disparaître certaines pièces importantes au cours des prochaines années.

As a result, it has been decided to create/publish a guide with the purpose of: making an inventory of all existing documents, conserving records and providing a comprehensive guide on all information available on the subject of horse breeding. In a second step the guide would help with the raising of funds necessary to create a central archive (documentation centre). The aim of this centre would be to collect and catalogue a large number of documents concerning horse breeding and to provide an opportunity for interested individuals to access these documents.

Au vu de cette situation précaire, il est apparu nécessaire, dans un premier temps, de rédiger un guide qui aura pour but de recenser les documents existants, de conserver les sources et de fournir un instrument de travail aux chercheurs. Dans un second temps, le guide devra faciliter la recherche de ressources financières pour la mise sur pied d'un centre de documentation qui réunirait un nombre important de documents sur l'élevage du cheval et permettrait aux personnes intéressées de chercher les sources relatives à l'élevage.

- The archives of all institutions with records of horse breeding will have been consulted, registered and catalogued.
- The guide will be written and published.
- The concept of the documentation centre/central archive (basic equipment, funds, access) will be developed.
From 2004 : bringing into operation of the documentation centre/central archive.
