Abstract

The TRUST project was a wide ranging research activity on user requirements, system aspects and enabling technologies for reconfigurable terminals and supporting networks, which complement 2G and 3G mobile systems. Starting from eliciting user requirements TRUST followed a top-down approach by then defining the system functions and architecture and augmenting the enabling technologies. TRUST followed two approaches:
- Augment, develop and validate analogue and baseband RF technology
- Develop and validate system functions across terminal and network, which are needed to manage reconfigurable devices
TRUST results led to a system design that is mainly driven by the user requirements and a set of functions, which are needed for the reconfiguration and download. Based on the concepts ideas, radio and flexible and broadband radio operation, were improved, covering power amplifier linearity, tunable filtering, linear frequency translation and transceiver architectures. A framework for future radio standards has been developed, which is embracing virtually all existing and future standards schemes. management.
A major achievement is the system architecture embracing terminal and network interaction for reconfiguration. Concepts for spectrum sharing is a central element for reconfigurable systems and based on existing standards we have shown the critical issues in a framework for joint radio resource management covering several standards.
TRUST addressed quite a number of aspects which are mentioned in conjunction with systems beyond 3rd generation of mobile communications systems. The project's work is complementary to the work of many other projects following the popular IP disussions for broadband communications. Software defined radios are seen as an enabler for future equipment, but raises much more questions on non-implementation oriented topics, which were addressed in the project. A roadmap was also developed for this decade on reconfigurable devices.
TRUST has proven that many systems issues can be addressed in various standardisation bodies and forums and many externals started sharing these ideas. TRUST has many liaison agreements to the SDR-Forum and to Japan, mITF.
TRUST organised to international conferences and contributed to the world-wide discussion about systems beyond 3G through to many journals and conference contributions.
