MEMPHIS (Multilingual content for flexible format Internet premium services) involves the definition, development and validation of a new system which will enable the operation of commercially significant multilingual premium services, focused on wearable thin clients such as mobile phones, PDAs, etc. MEMPHIS will extract multilingual information from various content sources in different formats, e.g. from the Internet.
Up to date, Memphis successfully finished the definition phase:
1. A user requirements report was carried out. Users are: a) end users who would appreciate push services for certain information categories (travel, finances, events etc.); preferred devices are PCs (also laptops), mobile phones, and PDA's. b) business users who would require the Memphis software toolbox to define their own service offerings.
2. The System requirements were written. The system will consist of three layers: acquisition (search for content in the internet, using mobile agent technology), transformation (apply language technology to summarise and translate the information), and delivery (to deliver the relevant messages to the subscribers' devices in their favourite language: email and SMS in the first version). Layers are connected by a common access to the data repository, and by a common system control. (see also MEMPHIS system block scheme on page 10)
3. The Service definition could also be clarified. Two services will be set up: MediAlert, a service which notifies customers upon announcement of new media articles (e.g.: books on classical rock music), and FinAlert, a service which informs users on news articles in the area of banking (e.g. bank mergers in Italy). Users can subscribe to these services via a registration portal, and receive alerts in push mode. The =mcminstitute was mainly involved in the market research, conducting end user and business market studies, in designing possible business models, in translating the user requirements into system requirements, and in modelling the two services MediAltert and FinAlert.
The result of the definition phase is a clear view on the system, and an implementation plan for the second phase of the project: creation of the first prototype.
