Abstract

Objectives and Problems to be solved:
The principle objective of the CINDERS project is to develop the technology to allow use of CMC (Ceramic Matrix Composites) combustion chambers to operate at an internal wall temperature of 1450C.
In order to successfully fulfil this objective a design manual will need to be generated which covers all aspects of design, manufacture and integration of CMC/TPS components, including all aspects relating to the production of coherent TPS.

Description of Work:
It is commonly understood that increasing the running temperature of a gas turbine engine has a beneficial effect on the overall performance of that engine. To allow large temperature increases new materials and material systems must be implemented. The CINDERS project will attempt to utilise one type of these new materials, namely CMCs to enable the internal wall temperature of the combustion chamber to be increased to 1450C. Current CMC materials have been seen to suffer degradation in properties at this temperature, which would make them unsuitable for application. Therefore, the CINDERS project will use two processing routes to develop thermal protection systems (TPS). Thermal spraying and sol-gel techniques will be developed either to form independent or mixed coating systems to allow the CMC to be used under its optimal conditions.

Expected results and exploitation plans:
A successful completion of the CINDERS project will provide thermal protection systems (TPS) for CMC combustion chambers resulting in an increase in wall temperature of the engine from 1100C to 1450C. If the resulting improvements were transferred across the engines of all the industrial partners involved in the project the European business would become significantly stronger. It is estimated that the total cost saving on fuel would be in excess of 1 billion EUR per annum.
European Community benefits would stem from improved environmental conditions (reduced NOx and CO2 emissions) and reduction in fuel consumption. These impacts will improve the environmental condition in Europe, and the world, resulting in reduced levels of environment related illness such as asthma and in reduction of the load on the health care services of European countries.
