Das 1943 gegründete STI ist heute ein biomedizinisches interdisziplinäres Forschungs-, Lehr- und Dienst-leistungsinstitut. Das STI hat sich während der letzten Jahre zu einem Institut der Internationalen Gesundheit gewandelt und arbeitet in den Bereichen Infektionsbiologie, Parasitologie, Epidemiologie und Gesundheitswesen zu molekularen und mikrobiellen Mechanismen von typischen Tropen-krankheiten und in der Entwicklung von Impfverfahren und von chemotherapeutischen Methoden. Das STI bietet Lehrveranstaltungen an der Universität Basel an. Regional bedeutend ist das medizinisch-diagnostische Dienstleistungszentrum betreffend Tropen-krankheiten. Der Bereich molekulare Epidemiologie und Gesundheitssystemforschung soll ausgebaut werden.

The Swiss Tropical Institute was founded in 1943. At present it is consituted as an interdisciplinary research institute with an emphasis on biomedical aspects of public health (biology of infections, parasitology, epidemiology, molecular and biological mechanisms of tropical diseases), including the development of medicaments for treatment.
