Branes with fluxes :
The deformation of purely geometrical backgrounds of M-theory by fluxes can be studied using eight-dimensional gauged supergravity. Hernandez and Sfetsos (Patras Univ.) have shown that the most general solution describing D6-branes wrapped on Kähler four-cycles taken to be the product of two-spheres of different radii can be lifted to M-theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau fourfold. As a four-form flux representing a set of D2-branes along the flat directions is turned on, the geometry is deformed to a direct product of four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with the Einstein-Sasakian seven manifold G1,1,1.
Branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles :
D6-branes lift to pure geometry in eleven dimensions. This indicates that compactifications of M-theory on manifolds with reduced holonomy arise as the local eleven-dimensional description of D6-branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles in manifolds of lower dimension with a different holonomy group. R. Hernandez and K. Sfetsos (Patras Univ.) have developed a systematic approach to manifolds of G2 holonomy with an SU(2)XSU(2) isometry, using maximal eight-dimensional gauged supergravity to describe D6-branes wrapped on deformed special Lagrangan three-spheres.
