Abstract
(Englisch)
This project intends to solve the limitations of present Li-ion battery technology by shifting the voltage window of the battery from the usual 0-4 Volts of lithium-ion to 1V-5V range. By replacing the carbon at the negative with titanium based oxide materials working at more than 1 Volt, the thermodynamic stability of the electrolyte is guaranteed, which saves 15% energy loss during the first cycles and is expected to improve safety. In order to maintain the cell energy, positive materials with working voltage 1Volt higher than LiCoO2 will be developed. Nanostructured form of these materials will be optimised to improve the specific power and so allow high drains in excess of 10C, solving Li-ion lack of power incharge. The new batteries will have better volumetric energy, abuse tolerance, power rate both for charge and discharge. Reasonable cost (0.16 Euro/Wh) will be achieved by using proven Li-ion cell technology and low cost raw materials.
