We work towards a platform technology that allows high efficiency targeted gene modification, including repair of mutated genes in the genome of humans but also site specific mutagenesis in living cells at will. For this aim we develop a novel class of sequence specific bioactive molecules: Therapeutic Repair Oligomers (TROs). TROs are able to recognize a particular DNA sequence and to induce specific sequence changes. The outcome of our research will have profound implications for human gene therapy by eliminating the need of introducing foreign genes. For plant breeding the platform technology will have the potential of creating new consumer friendly traits based on single point mutations.
