EPN aims to improve monitoring, assessment and prediction of climate induced phenological changes and their effects in Europe. The network will increase the efficiency, use, and added value of phenological research, monitoring, and data management in Europe. Changes in phenological events will have a wide range of consequences for ecology, agriculture, and human health. To cover the many scientific and policy aspects, both researchers and relevant end-users are involved. Through the organisation of two European conferences and six specialists workshops, the network enhances the coherence and collaboration in phonological research and monitoring in Europe, and thereby improves the exploitation and synthesis of existing data. By developing a comprehensive structure for data collection, management and dissemination, EPN will also enhance the application of phenological information by many end-users.
The overall objective is to increase the efficiency, added value and use of phenological research, monitoring, and data collection in Europe in the context of climate change.
Specific objectives are: 1) to facilitate integration and co-operation between existing phenological monitoring networks and to actively stimulate expansion of existing and creation of new monitoring networks 2) to improve integration of, and access to phenological data in Europe in a systematic, structural and user-friendly way 3) to exchange knowledge between phenologists of different scientific disciplines on tools and techniques used for phonological monitoring, database development, data analysis, model development, and impact assessment 4) to demonstrate the wide variety of possible applications of phenological research and its benefits for ecology, agriculture and society and realizing a stronger involvement of the end-users.
