MACSI-net is an initiative of twenty founding nodes (universities) and over eighty industrial nodes from fourteen countries to form an open network for the advancement of Mathematics, Computing and Simulation for Industry. MACSI-net's objective is, on the one hand, to provide a resource for industry (in particular SME) with advanced mathematical and computational tools, and on the other hand, to increase awareness of academia of industrial needs. The network will achieve its goals through strategic meetings with industries about well-specified topics, courses and workshops, visits of experts, and activity committees who actively look for funded proposals from EC or other bodies. MACSI-net has the potential to grow to a larger representative organisation devoted to co-ordinating the use of mathematics, computing science and engineering in industry in Europe, with a clear distinction to be useful for and actively involved with industry.

Objectives:
It is increasingly apparent that industry is meeting ever more challenging problems, which cannot be solved by experiment alone. At the moment there is still a gap between accumulated (potential) knowledge at academic institutions (often not so well directed towards industrial applications) on one hand and on the other and the expertise or the knowledge about the potential of scientific computing in many branches of industry, in particular SME. Therefore, the network will focus on strategies to increase the interaction between industry and academia in order to provide a resource for industry (in particular SME) with advanced mathematical and computational tools, and to increase awareness in academia of industrial needs. The network has a long-term objective to increase the competitiveness of European industries, by employing the full potential of applied mathematics and computing science.

Work description:
The network will have four activity areas:
(1) Research.
Strategic meetings will be held in various areas of industrial activities;
initially we plan to concentrate on: aeronautics, material processes, chemistry, environment, bio-engineering and medicine, telecommunication, energy.
In order to make the network effective, there will be three types of interactions: Working Groups, Task Forces, and Teams.

(2) Industrial Relations.
It goes without saying that the success of the afore mentioned concept is strongly dependent on involvement of the industry. Therefore the committee on industrial relations will actively monitor the interests as they may develop. The web page, the newsletter, and the visits to companies will be a part of this activity.

(3) Training.
The training of young researchers, both graduate and post graduate, who will temporarily work in industry, needs concerted action.

(4) Infrastructure.
Making new contacts with strategic areas and interested new nodes will be a major task. A website as well as a newsletter will be quite essential to inform about the MACSI-net activities.

Another major task is the maintenance of the electronic facilities of the network and the different computer science components, in particular a highly sophisticated interactive data exchange possibility.

Each of these areas will be co-ordinated through a special subcommittee. The overall co-ordination will be done through the executive committee, which will encompass the chairpersons o each of the subcommittees. The strategy board, responsible for the long-term strategy and an outlook on mathematics in industry. It will consist of people on high visibility and thorough expertise, at least 50% of whom are coming from industry.
