Abstract
(English)
The most promising candidates for the beam target of ADS are lead and its alloys. It was both on the basis of their properties and acquired experience in the field of liquid metals (LM) that Pb-Bi liquid eutectic has been selected as spallation material and as coolant for an ADS DEMO reactor. Even if the Russians have developed the technology of the Pb-Bi alloy, it is necessary to carry out several investigations in order to demonstrate the applicability of that technology and/or to develop new systems. Besides, thermal-hydraulic experiments, which cover fundamental topics typical for any ADS system, have to be performed in order to define analytical correlations for lead alloys and to validate codes for design. The final goal of this activity is to demonstrate whether a sub-critical system using Pb or Pb-Bi as spallation target and coolant is really technologically feasible.
