Abstract
(English)
The COST Action 343 'Reduction in Road Closure by Improved Maintenance Procedures' started in April 1999. The primary objective of the Action is to achieve a reduction in the number and duration of road closures by finding an appropriate balance between engineering-focused pavement maintenance and user costs, delays, and safety hazards. The objective will be attained by identifying the most appropriate pavement maintenance options using best procedures for the organisation and selection of the maintenance treatments. The Work Programme of the Action is built around five Work Packages, each producing one of the five deliverables. The Swiss contribution deals with the Work Packages 1 and 2. The aim of Work Package 1 is to produce a database of maintenance options that are applied across Europe, including data on their life expectancy and on the time required for their application. Work Package 2 aims at producing a document containing a selection of maintenance procedures and schemes regarding the organisation of pavement maintenance on motorways and primary road networks in Europe, which seem to be the most interesting and the most promising regarding the reduction of road closure, traffic disruption, and safety issues. As such information is not centralised in Switzerland, but spread in the different cantons and although in the road construction companies, it has been decided to collect requested information in some cantons in the French part as well as in the German speaking part, in order to have a good representation of the maintenance techniques and procedures that are applied in Switzerland. Information on maintenance techniques and procedures have been collected in the cantons of Fribourg, Vaud, Valais, Zürich, Graubünden und St Gallen by interviewing road maintenance managers in charge of the maintenance of the motorways and the primary road network. Information has also been provided by Mr. Rafi, expert in pavement maintenance.
