Abstract
(Englisch)
Activated sludge foaming has become a widespread problem in biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). It causes serious operating problems, increases maintenance and may lead to poor quality effluent. Certain types of hydrophobic bacteria (particularly 'Microthrix parvicella' and nocardioform actinomycetes) are thought to be responsible. These organisms are able to produce surfactants and stabilize the foam with their hydrophobic cell walls. In this project, methods for the rapid quantification of suspected foam-forming bacteria and to measure the foaming potential of activated sludge were developed. These methods were used to measure long-term time series of these microorganisms and the foaming intensities at different wastewater treatment plants in order to clarify the role of these organisms. To further investigate the reasons and hypothesized mechanisms of growth and foam-formation, a two-lane pilot plant was build and is still operating. The gained data are used to develop a mathematical model describing the growth of bacteria that potentially produce foam. Such a model will provide an instrument to develop effective strategies for foaming control. The project is ongoing beyond the frame of the COST action and will be finished until summer 2005.
