Abstract

Overall, this project allowed us to explore several ligand classes and materials in order to develop lanthanide-containing monometallic and bimetallic luminescent compounds, with potential applications in the field of bioanalytical analyses. To minimize synthetic work, we have first turned to derivatives of dipicolinic acid fitted in the pyridine 4-position with either a chromophoric group (the keto-enol equilibrium was studied versus the nature of the substituent) or a linking group for coupling with biological material. The cyclen framework have also been used, as a continuation of a previous project under COST action D8. and we have grafted three chromophoric groups and a carboxylic acid pendant arm onto it; the resulting Eu(III) and TB(III) proved to be reasonable luminescent and to transfer efficiently energy onto the well known acceptor CY5. A ditopic, hexadentate ligand fitted with isothiocyanatophenylethynyl linking groups hals also been synthesized and its complexes with Ln(III) ions investigated. Its coupling with biological material is presently being tested. A macrocyclic cryptand yielded interesting dimetallic complexes with good sensitization of the Dy(III) luminescence, while a lariat crown ether was shown to sensitize the luminescence of Nd(III). Podands were also investigated, of which one based on tren fitted with benzoate group proved to be a good chromophore for sensitizing Tb(III) luminescence. Finally, we have developed liquid crystalline phases based on a room-temperature ionic liquid which are hightly lumineschent in the NIR, a spectral range of high interest for medical imaging.
