The 15th International Symposium 'Informatics for Environmental Protection'·
with the 2001 main theme 'Sustainability in the Information Society'

· October 10 - 12, 2001 at ETH Zurich
This annual symposium of the Expert Committee 4.6 of the German Informatics Society is the best-established and largest event for Environmental IST in Europe. The international dimension is decisively strengthened this year by the fact that the event is
· hosted by the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and can benefit from ETHs international network and reputation, and
· takes place in Zurich, which is an internationally attractive venue.
This Event is an outstanding chance for the IST programme to
· present their projects to a highly professional and international audience,
· to disseminate r&d results very efficiently to the scientific community, to enterprises and to the general public.
· enhance the visibility of the European Commission's activities in the field of IST, especially IST and environment/sustainability.
Expected results of the operation
The conference will directly contribute to the strategic objective of the Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme, '...to realise the benefits of the information society for Europe both by accelerating its emergence and by ensuring that the needs of individuals and enterprises are met.'
The conference will
· explore the opportunities of IST with respect to sustainability, including ecological, social and economic aspects,
. treat basic questions as well as the development and application of tools for enterprises and public authorities, disseminate results to decision-makers in enterprises,
· provide excellent networking opportunities in the IST field (which is facilitated by CEC staff members having free access to the event).
The results of the conference is published in the Proceedings in the 'Environmental Informatics' series edited by Metropolis-Verlag.
