Abstract
(English)
The increasing needs of developing multimedia applications on mobile terminals, has prompted the scientific and industrial telecom research community to develop very high frequency components and antennas (up to several tens of Gigahertz) with very severe requirements on size, bandwidth (directly related to channel capacity), low power consumption and limited&controlled overall electromagnetic radiation for the antennas. The objective of this research network is to develop the software tools necessary for the simulation at early stages of the design process of the electromagnetic behaviour of components and antennas. This will allow to easily test new designs and ideas and will speed up the time-to-the-market of the coming generations of communication systems. For developing these tools, a training network has been created, including telecom multinational companies, european SMEs, research institutes and universities. The exchange between these institutions of scientific and technical information and of young researchers will hopefully allow the effective training of a new generation of high frequency Telecom specialists during the lifetime of this project.LEMA/EPFL's main activity within this project is related to characterization of high frequency planar circuits and antennas. During this first year, the effort has been concentrated on numerical analysis issues. The first results have been presented in several international symposia and should result in join publications with other members of the team.A second activity is motivated by LEMA/EPFL great experience in the area, thanks to previous EU and ESA activities, as recognized by all the other partners. LEMA-EPFL is currently acting as scientific coordinator and advisor for integrating the developed software modules from other partners of the MMCODEF network. Finally, the exchange of researchers has recently started with young trainees from Germany and Spain staying in LEMA-EPFL for Ph.D. thesis developments or shorter-term activities.
