Abstract

EUROFASTNET project addresses Future Advances in Sciences and Technology for Nuclear Engineering Thermal-Hydraulics. Starting from an exhaustive review of the industrial needs for the next ten years and after a survey of the State of the Art in the relevant fields and the current limitations of the available tools, new avenues of research are proposed in physical modelling of thermal-hydraulic phenomena, numerical techniques, experimental investigations, and uncertainty methods.
A Review of the needs for at least the next decade was performed and a list of 44 needs was established. They were ranked according to their industrial priority. The needs are related to safety, reactor design, reactor performance and availability, reactor ageing and correspond to issues for which the industry has answers today but for which further R&D work would provide more accurate and/or more reliable answers.
The State of the Art reviewed present system codes, component codes, some recent two-phase computational fluid dynamics (CFD) type codes, and available tools for uncertainty evaluation. Although the capabilities of current computational tools and methods are able to address the safety issues, some limitations and weaknesses were identified.
Proposals for future R&D in two-phase thermal-hydraulics are made, mainly focused toward fundamental developments able to attract and train a young generation of scientists for the preservation of the expertise. As a consequence, the following proposals could cover a period of 10 years or more, rather than a few years. Some of the examples of the proposals:
· New physical models and numerical schemes are proposed to be developed to improve the accuracy and the reliability of simulations. Multi-field capabilities, transport of interfacial area, and turbulence modelling should be used in macroscopic models. A two-phase CFD tool with a finer resolution to capture smaller scale flow processes should be developed.
· Regarding numerical schemes, an effort should be made to increase the accuracy
· Future experimental programs having advanced instrumentation are required for developing and validating the new models. In addition, a long term support to the EU-CERTA database, which has been initiated as Network in the 5th Framework Programm of EU, is required.
· Code uncertainty methodologies should be applied to new exercises for different type of transients, guidelines and acceptance criteria should be defined and their use in the licensing process should be supported. Methods should be extended to the new codes and to coupled codes.
Final report on EUROFASTNET project has been issued by mid-January 2003.
