Résumé des résultats (Abstract)

The main objective of the 6INIT project was to promote the introduction of IPv6 network supporting multimedia services with QoS and security in Europe. The project will furthermore provide guidelines on how to set-up an operational platform providing end users with native IPv6 access points and services. The project was organized in 5 workpackages : Project management, IPv6 network architectural design, Network implementation and testing, Trials and demonstrations, Dissemination. The 6INIT network design was based on available components and user needs to be pragmatic towards real network and applications demonstration at the end of the project. So, at the very early stage of the project the distributed networks at the national level was introduced which are interconnected later to form pan-European IPv6 network. Multiple applications were ported from public sources and some specific applications are developed in the project. The final demonstration were successfully shown in the international conference INET conference in Stockholm in June 2001 and received major applause from the key internet Gurus and the press. Telscom participated in each of these activities very actively.Applications were considered on priority to draw the attention of the users. All available and known applications were identified and almost all data applications were ported to IPv6 (some of them on both LINUX and WINDOWS). LINUX was finally adopted for testing purposes.Data applications that are implemented are ftp, tranceroute, web, send and fetch mail, Quake game etc.. IPv6 website of telscom is also implemented. In addition to this TELSCOM took up the development of SIP based VoIP within the project. VPN/Security was also implemented in collaboration with IABG and 6WIND, which was tested in the labs.Telscom network was part of U.K cluster. Within Switzerland we implemented IPv6 network at Telscom, Univ of Bern and MCLAB in Basel which are interconnected on tunneled mode, and is further linked to 6INIT network through U.K cluster. The project involved many partners spread across Europe. To ease the integration phase it was decided that five network clusters should initially be constructed from the various accedemic and company networks that were partners of the 6init project. These network were based in : UK (including Telscom and NTT), Scandinavia, Germany, France, GreeceEach of these networks was designed to be self contained ie they were each design to have : interworking, DNS, external peerings etc.
