Within a regional framework, the African Highland Initiative develops and institutionali-ses effective and efficient approaches for sustainable natural resource management appro-aches and enhanced productivity in the intensively cultivated highalnds of Eastern Africa.

Abstract (English)

The African Highlands Initiative (AHI) is an ecoregional research program that focuses on improving livelihoods and reversing natural resource degradation in the intensively cultivated highlands of East and Central Africa. To this end, AHI promotes an "integrated natural resource management approach" (INRM) where coordination of collaborative and participatory research and development efforts are integrated to improve agricultural production and natural resource management in highland watersheds, address the human and institutional factors affecting management, and aim to help construct more conducive development strategies and policies. Insitutional change and implementation on national level, regional aspects focus on me-thodology and framework creation. Monitoring also on both levels.
