Description succincte
(Anglais)
Developed and identified stress tolerant robust maize varieties with more than 50% higher yields under conditions typical for resource poor farmers in the SADC region, thus contributed to stabilised yields and therefore assured income and food security of a high number of farmers.
Established a region-wide network among the National Research Institutes of SADC, private seed companies, and NGOs that evaluates elite pre-release maize varieties from all collaborators for those growing conditions and characteristics important to resource-poor farmers in SADC. The network assures a continuous development of new germplasm in future.
Initiated cost-effective on-farm testing schemes at the national and sub-regional level where the best varieties from the regional trials are verified under farmer-managed conditions, feed-back from farmer is sought to new maize varieties, and resource-poor farmers thereby systematically influence breeding priorities.
Objectifs du projet
(Anglais)
Develop maize germplasm, which has increased yield and yield stability, under con-ditions typical for resource-poor farmers without further depleting natural resources (water, nutrients, and land), and·
Enhance the capacity in the SADC region to improve and disseminate maize germ-plasm with tolerance to drought and low soil fertility.
Résumé des résultats (Abstract)
(Anglais)
The expected impact of this project is to raise and stabilize maize production in the whole of SADC with immediate effect on the food and income security of resource poor-farmers. This is done through new maize varieties, but also through a regional testing network and strong links to private sector in order to take stake in the small scale farmer seed needs.
Mise en oeuvre et application
(Anglais)
Released open-pollinated varieties in all member countries of SADC (Southern African Development Commission) have a potential to add to food security to more than 250 Mio. People. Considerable contribution to national policies.
