Im Dez. 2000 hat das Eidg. Departement des Innern (EDI) folgende 10 NFS-Projekte bewilligt:
- Molecular oncology - from basic research to therapeutic approaches (Prof. Michel Aguet, ISREC)
- Frontiers in genetics - Genes, chromosomes and development (Prof. Denis Duboule, Universität Genf)
- Materials with novel electronic properties - Basic science and applications (Prof. Oystein Fischer, Universität Genf)
- Molecular life sciences: three-dimensional structure, folding and interactions (Prof. Markus G. Grütter, Universität Zürich)
- Nanoscale science - impact on life sciences, sustainability, information and communication technologies (Prof. Hans-Joachim Güntherodt, Universität Basel)
- Quantum photonics (Prof. Marc Ilegems, EPF Lausanne)
- Neural plasticity and repair (Prof. Hanns Möhler, Universität Zürich)
- Plant survival in natural and agricultural ecosystems (Prof. Martine Rahier, Universität Neuchâtel)
- CIMINT - Computer aided and image guided medical interventions (Prof. Gabor Szekely, ETH Zürich)
- Climate variability, predictability and climate risks (Prof. Heinz Wanner, Universität Bern)

Neues Förderinstrument zur Stärkung der Forschung und der Umsetzung von Forschungsergebnissen auf strategisch wichtigen Forschungsgebieten. Die NFS sollen ab der Beitragsperiode 2000 bis 2003 schrittweise die bisherigen Schwerpunktprogramme (SPP) ablösen und diese durch die koordinierte Etablierung vom Kompetenzzentren und damit verbundenen Netzwerken ersetzen. Mit den NFS soll noch stärker eine institutionelle Verankerung von Forschunsinitativen an sogenannte Heiminstitutionen erzielt werden.

In order to strengthen Switzerland's position and to reorganize research in domains of strategic importance the Swiss National Science Foundation plans to implement a new promotion instrument called "National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR)". NCCR with attached networks under their responsibility will be established from the year 2000 on. They replace step by step the existing Priority Programmes.

L'objectif du programme "Pôles de recherche nationaux" (PRN) est le renforcement et la réorganisation de la recherche suisse dans des domaines de recherche stratégiquement importants pour notre pays. Pour atteindre cet objectif, il s'agira à partir de l'année 2000 d'établir de façon coordonnée des pôles de recherche nationaux sous forme de centres de compétences et de réseaux de recherche animés par ceux-ci.
