Food consumption data are important to estimate food and nutrient intakes, as well as to assess exposure to substances, which may be beneficial or harmful for health. Data collection for the first national nutrition survey, i.e. menuCH1, included anthropometric measurements and two 24-hour dietary recalls for 2000 adults. MenuCH1 did not include children or adolescents, who are among those most at risk of unhealthy diet, malnutrition or exposure to diet related toxic substances. Furthermore, many health-related habits are determined during childhood and adolescence. Therefore, these age groups will be covered in menuCH2, planned for 2019-2020. The aims of this project are 1) to write a detailed protocol and conduct a feasibility study for a Swiss national nutrition survey in children and adolescents, and 2) to provide insight into current food consumption occasions and dietary patterns of young adults as compared to older ones using menuCH1 data. The project is intended as a PhD in life sciences-epidemiology at the University of Lausanne by a PhD student specifically chosen for her expertise in nutrition and experience gained through menuCH1.
