Sublethale Dosen von Pflanzenschutzmitteln können in Kombination mit andern Mitteln oder in Kombination mit Krankheiten folgenschwere Wirkungen auf Bienengesundheit haben (Alaux 2010; Kralj 2010). Rigorosere Sanierungsbestimmungen können die Sauerbrut nur beschränkt eindämmen. Habitatverlust ist weltweit gesehen die grösste Bedrohung für die Honigbiene (Brown, 2009)

Pyrrolizidin Alkaloide wurden 2008 von der IARC als möglicherweise karzinogen eingestuft (Gallmann et. al., 2009). Ca. 50% des CH Honigs sind laut erstem Screening betroffen. Bei Pollen dürfte die Situation noch kritischer sein, erste Untersuchungen sind bereits im Gange. Botanische und geographische Authentizität von Bienenprodukten gewinnt unter obiger Optik massiv an Bedeutung. Lösungsansätze werden gesucht mittels FTIR-Technik, über volatile Markersubstanzen in Nektar sowie Isotopenanalyse. (Ruoff et al., 2003; Ruoff et al., 2006;Ruoff and Bogdanov 2004). Die Nulltoleranz für Antibiotika, welche mit Anpassung an EU Recht eingeführt wurde, ergibt ein Risiko für die Marktfähigkeit von Honig aufgrund landwirtschaftlicher Praktiken: Asulambehandlung gegen Breitblattunkräuter: (Gallmann et al., 2005). Vermehrt eingesetzte Proteinfütterung in der Bienenhaltung könnte Ursache für Hefefragmente in Honig sein. In der Praxis ist das Rühren von Honig für Kristallisationssteuerung immer weiter verbreitet. Suboptimal gerührter Honig neigt zu Phasentrennung. Es fehlen technologische Grundlagen. Gesundheit
Die Öffentlichkeit und die Imkerschaft erwarten von der Forschung die Klärung der Ursachen sowie Lösungen für das Phänomen Bienensterben, das auf der gesamten Nordhalbkugel grassiert. Im Bereich der Bienengesundheit wurden in den letzten beiden Jahren, insgesamt 27 Artikel (20 gelistet) in internationalen Fachzeitschriften publiziert. Die Themen umfassten: Forschungsstrategien (9, 14), Völkerdichten (18, 19), Völkerverlusten (1, 2, 6, 7, 11, 14, 17), Viren (12), Kleinen Beutenkäfern (5, 10), Diagnosemethoden (13, 16), Kontrollverfahren (15) und imkerlichen Methoden (20). Spezifisch für die Schweiz bzw. die Bedrohung der Honigbienen hierzulande sind die Bienenseuche Europäische Faulbrut (Sauerbrut) sowie die parasitische Milbe Varroa destructor per se wie auch als Vektor für andere Krankheitserreger im Vordergrund der Forschungsaktivitäten. Allerdings muss das ZBF die Schweiz (Behörden und Branche) auch auf die Ankunft der zu erwartenden neuen Parasiten vorbereiten, insbesondere die Milbe Tropilaelaps und den kleinen Beutenkäfer.
