Das SIB ist 1998 als non-profit Organisation (Stiftung) gegründet. Es hat folgende Ziele:
- Förderung der Software-Entwicklung und der Datenbanken im Bereich der Bioinformatik;
- Weiterführung eines bestehenden Forschungsprogramms von hoher Qualität im Bereich Bioinformatik;
- Das Erarbeiten von Ausbildungsprogrammen für Forschende im Bereich Bioinformatik in Zusammenarbeit mit den akademischen Partnern;
- Das Bereitstellen von Dienstleistungen für die Forschenden in der Schweiz mit Hilfe des Swiss-EMBnet Knotens (dieser wird gegenwärtig von ISREC und der Universität Genf unterhalten).
Zusammengefasst will das SIB die Bioinformatik in einer Art und Weise fördern, dass der herausragende Platz der Schweiz weiterhin gefestigt und ausgebaut wird.
Bei den Dienstleistungen will das SIB die Datenbanken SWISS-PROT, PROSITE, EPD, SWISS-2DPAGE sowie die Dienste des EMBnet weiterentwickeln.
Das SIB ist assoziiert mit den Universitäten Genf und Lausanne, dem ISREC, dem Ludwig Institute sowie Glaxo Wellcome Experimental Research (GWER). Es sucht auch die Zusammenarbeit mit industriellen Partnern.

The Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is an academic institution established in 1998 as a non-profit foundation. The goals of this institute are:
To promote the development of software tools and databases in the field of bioinformatics;
To sustain a high-quality research program in bioinformatics;
To provide, in collaboration with academic partners, a curriculum of courses and seminars for the formation of research scientists in the field of bioinformatics;
To offer services to the Swiss scientific user community through the Swiss-EMBnet node (which is currently maintained jointly by Swiss Institute for Cancer Research and the University of Geneva).
In summary, the goal of the Institute is to promote bioinformatics activities in such a way as to maintain and develop the prominence of Switzerland in this field.
As for the services provided, SIB intends to develop and extend the data bases SWISS-PROT, PROSITE, EPD, SWISS-2DPAGE as well as the services provided by EMBnet.
The Institute is tightly associated to the University of Geneva, the University of Lausanne, the Swiss Institute for Cancer Research (ISREC), the Ludwig Institute and Glaxo Wellcome Experimental Research (GWER). It will also operate in association with industrial partners.

L'ISB est une institution de recherche académique qui a été établie en 1998 comme fondation sans but lucratif. Ses objectifs sont:
La promotion et le développement de logiciels et bases de données dans le domaine de la bioinformatique;
La continuation d'un programme de recherche à haut niveau en bioinformatique;
L'offre d'un programme de cours et séminaires pour la formation continue de chercheurs en bioinformatique, notamment au travers d'une collaboration avec les partenaires académiques;
La mise à disposition de services pour les chercheurs suisses au travers de noeud de Swiss-EMBnet (qui est actuellement entretenu conjointement par l'ISREC et l'Université de Genève).
En bref, l'ISB veut promouvoir la bioinformatique d'une manière à ce que la place privilégiée de la Suisse soit assurée.
Quant aux services, l'ISB a comme mission de développer et étendre les bases de données SWISS-PROT, PROSITE, EPD, SWISS-2DPAGE et les services d'EMBnet.
L'institut est associé aux universités de Genève et Lausanne, à l'Institute suisse de recherche sur le cancer (ISREC), à l'Institut Ludwig et à Glaxo Wellcome Experimental Research (GWER). Il cherche également la coopération avec des partenaires industriels.
